As 2018 is about to draw close its final month curtain, Gartner released its Q3 2018 period global smartphone sales report. According to Gartner Inc., the global smartphone sales for third quarter 2018 stands at 389 million units, which represents 1.4% increase in the period.
With Samsung taking the lead, the report shows that Chinese brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo is seriously gaining ground in the global smartphone sales. In fact, Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner, in his research confirmed that Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo were the only reason why the global smartphone market did not decline by 5.2% compared to 3Q 2017. He said and I quote, ‘ If we had taking both Huawei and Xiaomi out of the global smartphone vendors list, smartphone sales to end user would have declined by 5.2 percent’. He went further to say that ‘ led by low-price smartphones , enhanced camera features, high-quality resolution displays, top Chinese mobile phone manufacturers boosted their sale across emerging market in the third quarter of 2018.

Although,smartphones sale are declining for most mobile phone manufacturers, Huawei remains resilient and the No. 1 smartphone brand in China and comfortably occupying the top 3 among many European market.
After tracking global smartphone sales for some time, Gartner reports that Samsung witnessed the most decline in the third quarter of 2018. Samsung’s smartphone sales declined by 14 percent in the global market.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s Galaxy S9, S9+, and Note 9 managed to boost demand in 2018, but the top smartphone maker continued to face stiff competition from Chinese brands.
Apple’s market sales was flat in the third quarter of 2018, with a mere 0.3 percent growth seen. According to Gupta, ‘Apple’s Iphones are facing a saturated premium smartphone market with growth rate and increased competition in China.
As global smartphone market sales continues to fall, glimpse of hope is placed on the feature technologies like 5G enabled and foldable smartphones. It is believe that these feature technologies can boost user experience, thereby increasing the global smartphone sales by 2020. The foldable smartphones will start selling from the first quarter of 2019, but will be very expensive.
