Also, in this game what hand you shall use also determines your winning or losing. The probability of winning lies in which poker hands you are using. There are several hands used in poker and they have rankings. So, to ace a poker match, you must understand the importance of different hands in poker.

What is a poker hand?

Poker hand – A set of five playing cards that players make according to the particular game’s rules. There are various hands in poker, each of which has a rank. While playing the game, players compare one rank against the other and the player who has the top-ranked poker hand wins the game.

Types of poker hands

In general, there are 10 different types of poker hands. The list of poker hands from the first position to the last is mentioned below.

  • Royal Flush
  • Four-of-a-kind
  • Straight Flush
  • Flush
  • Full House
  • Three-of-a-kind
  • Straight
  • Two pairs
  • Pair
  • No Pair (high card)

Now let’s understand these poker hands one by one.

Royal Flush

In Poker, this hand is considered to be the best move. Royal Flush consists of five playing cards of a similar suit in which Ace is the highest and 10 is the lowest. For instance, if you have a royal flush of Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10, you are declared the winner.

Straight Flush

Straight flush ranks second in the poker hands list. In this poker hand, you must mix five cards of consecutive numbers but similar suit (or symbol). For instance, 9,8,7,6, and 5.

Four-of-a-kind

According to pro-Poker players, four-of-a-kind is the easiest to meld. As the name suggests, this poker hand comprises four cards of similar ranks along with one card from a different rank. For example, four 7s and a 9.

Full House

A full house is a combination of pair and three-of-a-kind. Though these two poker hands are at a lower position in the order of rankings, this is one of the best possible moves to win a poker game. In this poker hand, players need to make three cards of similar rank and a pair of other ranks. For example, three 8s and two 7s.

Flush

A Flush consists of five playing cards which are of the same suit (symbol), irrespective of the numerological order. However, if more than one player has a flush then the card having the highest value would be taken into consideration. For instance, if player X has J, 10, 8, 5, and 4 and player B has J, 9, 7, 6, and 3 then player Y will be the winner. Because the former player’s second card has a greater denomination than that of the latter player.

Straight

A straight is also a well-known poker hand that is easy to meld. Five playing cards arranged in the numerological order, irrespective of the suit, are called Straight hands. An example of a straight hand is J, 10, 9, 8, and 7.

Three-of-a-kind

As the name suggests, three-of-a-kind consists of three playing cards of similar suits and the other two cards of different suits. On the hand, the denomination of the cards also determines who’s winning the round. An example of three-of-a-kind is three Qs, a 6, and a 7.

Two pairs

In two pairs, two cards must be of the same rank and the other two cards shall be of other ranks. For example, two Aces, two Queens, and a 10.

One Pair

In Poker, One Pair is the most common hand. As the name suggests, One Pair consists of a pair of cards from a similar rank and the other three cards from different ranks. In this type of hand, it doesn’t matter which suit the cards belong to. The denomination is what matters in one pair. For instance, two Aces, a Jack, a 7, and a 5.

No Pair or High Card

In Poker, a high card ranks the lowest in the order of poker hands. In this combination, all the five cards are from different suits having different numbers. Simply put, there are no matching cards in a high card. For example, a King, a Queen, a 7, a 5, and a 4.
