Compared to the P Smart Plus, it is more complete, compared to the significantly larger P20 lite, while at the hardware level we are on a more than satisfactory level: the 12-nm SoC is newly designed and supports AI in hardware, the display is excellent despite not very high viewing angles, and the battery offers a great autonomy with durations that can reach up to two days. The photographic aspect is also good about the price, with a sort of “wow” effect.
Performance
In practical terms, the gaming performance is fine. Asphalt 9 performed quite well, even when we got to high settings, although there were occasional hitches. Guns of Boom fly positively, even if 60fps mode is active.
PUBG Mobile lagged a bit at high graphics settings, and we also noticed weird visual artifacts, which would seem to indicate the use of that less well-supported chip. The Kirin 710 doesn’t have developer support of, for example, the Snapdragon 660 found in the Xiaomi Mi A2 and Nokia 7 Plus.

In the year of the notch, one thing that hasn’t changed much right now is the broader approach to video. The vast majority of video content was still available in 16: 9. At the same time, we found Bluetooth headphones to be easy to plug in and stable.
Without those additional devices, the Mate 20 Lite’s audio output isn’t great. Its single speaker on the bottom is pretty crappy, and it’s also too easy to block while gaming. But then, this is a common complaint south of the tip line. While playing music via the included Google Play Music app, the lock screen widget convinced us. It is of good taste, attractive and helpful without being intrusive. We’re less interested in the ongoing battery notification that accompanied it.
Camera
Mate 20 Lite is equipped with 4 cameras. The two main ones are a 20-megapixel ƒ / 1.8 and a secondary 2 megapixel one for calculating the depth of field. The main camera is not perfect, and especially in low light, it shows its limits, remaining more than enough for classic social use. However, it is a camera more than worthy of the mid-range, which manages to offer clear images and balanced colours. Automatic HDR is present, although it doesn’t appear to be too aggressive in coming into play.
Artificial intelligence, which recognizes up to 200 scenes, is more sound adapts the colours, often and willingly accentuating the colours. However, you can always keep this mode active, considering that it is still possible to deactivate it after the shot. Among the shooting modes, we find that portrait. Which works well and that of AR lenses that allow you to transform into a Japanese cartoon. The 24 megapixels + 2-megapixel dual front camera system is also good.
Do not expect, given the very high number of pixels, better photos than the main camera. But still, they are more than good results for a medium range. Here too, the second camera allows you to cut out the subject, also applying lighting effects. Videos are recordable in Full HD up to 60 fps, although electronic stabilization (which for some reason is turned off by default ) stops at 30 fps videos. The focus is not very fast and sometimes requires a tap on the screen, but the quality is more than enough, and the stabilization is good.

The Mate 20 Lite’s display is a nice 6.3-inch diagonal with FullHD + resolution, or 1080 x 2340 pixels in IPS technology. It’s by no means a perfect display, but we have very little to contest in its category. The colours are charged (there is also a “normal” mode in the settings, “the brightness is high, and the adaptation to environmental conditions is very fast thanks to the brightness sensor. Among the options, we find the possibility to hide the not exactly tiny notch, the ability to activate eye protection for night viewing, and the ability to vary the colour temperature.
Compared to P Smart Plus, however, we have some obvious improvements and which we welcome: first of all, the connectivity sector is more modern with the presence of a USB Type-C port and the support of Wi-Fi ac and double band network connections (P Smart Plus only supported 2.4 GHz, while Mate 20 Lite can also take advantage of the faster 5 GHz band), while the battery grows by a few hundred mAh bringing the calculation to 3,750. All with an increase in weight that we can consider negligible: where P Smart Plus pushed the needle of the scales up to 169 grams, the new Mate 20 Lite reaches only 172 grams.
There are no other fundamental innovations, if not the main camera, that supports a higher resolution: even the Mate 20 Lite implements a total of four cameras, like the P Smart Plus. But the rear one is 20 MP with a wider and, therefore, brighter aperture (f / 1.8 versus f / 2.2 of the P Smart Plus).
Software
There is no news in the Mate 20 Lite software, which is always the same EMUI 8.2 already seen elsewhere and based on Android 8.1 Oreo, at the time of the review updated with July’s patches. Among the most interesting functions, we have some gestures—the possibility of activating the one-handed mode of use and changing themes.
Finally, the Phone Manager is always present to manage the notifications and permissions of the individual apps. Among other software, we also mention the file manager, software for notes, the Party mode to make the smartphone play together with other Huawei and Health to track physical activity. Overall we continue to hope for a renewal, above all aesthetic, of the Huawei interface. But there is no doubt that there is not much more that we could ask for from a mid-range in terms of performance and functionality. The native launcher allows a good customization level (for example, you can enable or disable the app drawer to have only the most important apps or all those installed on the Home).
The features present are those typical of Huawei terminals. So we have a design that resembles that of iOS, with abundant use of transparencies, bright colours, and generally clear shades. By default, some more dark elements in the Mate family characterize the style even if there are. There are several system customization settings and to have greater control of the device: Finally, there is a Simple Mode to easily access the main functions of the smartphone, designed for very young or elderly users, at the time of writing or in mid-September.

Integrated into the smartphone, we find the possibility to record the operating system’s screens on video during use. As we wrote just above, Artificial Intelligence optimizes performance (especially graphics, and not only). Even if in normal use, it is rather difficult to detect real performance advantages.
Autonomy
Mate 20 Lite incorporates a 3750 mAh battery. Considering the excellent energy performance of the HiSilicon processor and Huawei’s always very conservative software. You can always get through the full day of intense work. You can squeeze it for up to two days of autonomy, but only with more moderate use.
