How do I sign in to my UMN Course using the Canvas App?
If you’re using a web browser, in most cases, you’ll enter your UMN username and password to sign in. However, if you use a mobile device (Android or iOS), there is one additional step. Open your browser, go to Canvas Login, and select your course link. You will be given 2 options on logging in, either through App Links or Access Code. Choosing App Links will prompt an installation on your device if needed while choosing Access Code will prompt you to enter a code provided by your instructor. Once logged in, Canvas should look similar to Moodle but different enough!
Create a new Canvas UMN account
Using your UMN email address, create a new account at www.umid.umn.edu (student login only) and click continue to access UMMyOptions. If you already have an existing Canvas UMN account, log in with your regular password and proceed to UMMyOptions.
Once you’ve logged in at umid.umn.edu and accessed UMMyOptions. Choose Personal Information from tabs at the top of the page. Select Social Security Number from the drop-down menu on the left side of the page and type it into the appropriate box. Now select NetID from the drop-down menu on the right side of the page and type it into the appropriate box.
How do I reset my password?
If you’ve forgotten your password, don’t panic! You can reset it by clicking on forgot my password and following these steps. First, verify that you’re trying to log in from a secure location.
Next, enter your username and email address. Once logged in, you will see a button saying Forgot Password. Click that button and follow the instructions to set up a new password.

Note: Resetting your password removes all access to class content in Canvas. Don’t forget you’ll need an active UMN email account to access course materials.
Why can’t I log in?
If you can’t log in to your UMN account, there are a few things you can try. Make sure that you’re typing your username and password correctly. It is also possible that your credentials are correct, but you don’t have permission to access Canvas from off-campus.

The best way to handle unexpected problems is often to prevent them from happening in the first place. Make sure you’re logging in with a secure computer whenever you can. Phishing attacks attempt by cybercriminals to steal your password are on the rise. And criminals will do anything they can to get their hands on your personal information.

What if I forgot my username?
If you log in to UMN Canvas, you can use your email address to get back in. Enter your email in the forgot username or password? Field on UMN Canvas, and we’ll automatically send a link to your default email account with instructions on resetting your login credentials.
If you don’t receive an email within 10 minutes, check any spam folders in your email account and make sure that a filtering service or add-on program isn’t blocking messages from [email protected].

How to Access – If you’re new to UMN and logging in with your University email account, you’ll need to update your profile (you should see a Forgot Password link on the top-right corner). To do so, click on that link and follow instructions from there.

Fill out all required fields on that page, including your first name and student ID number. The system will send you an email within 10 minutes containing a link to reset your password. Follow that link and enter a new password twice.
